The story of Nicholas
Nicholas DELPERDANG was
born on March 9th 1829 in Warnach
<•>, a small village at 10 km
south of Bastogne (Belgium). He was the
fifth of the eleven children of Michel
Joseph DELPERDANGE and Anne Marie
KLAINES.
|
Since most of the ancestors of Nicolas
DELPERDANG were born in Bastogne and lived
there, he can directly be traced to Henri HANSY, the common forefather of all those
who carry the name DELPERDANGE:

DELPERDANGE (1829-1912) and Joséphine
STEMPERT (1830-1872)

(1796-1846) and Anne Marie KLAINES
(1799-1879)

and

(....-1816)

and Marie Françoise BARTHOLOME
(????-1773)

 |
Génération 1 Henry HANSY (????-????)
and Catherine COLENS (????-????)
|
|
On 22/05/1855
<•>
in his village of WARNACH, he married Josephine
STEMPERT from the nearby village of Tintange. She was
born in Tintange on 02/09/1830, as the daughter of Jean
Pierre STEMPERT (who died on 02/05/1843 in Tintange) and
Marguerite VIANA.

Nick DELPERDANG (1829-1912) and his wife
Josephine STEMPERT (1830-1872)
A year after their
marriage,
Josephine gave birth to a first child, Nicolas, who was born
in Warnach (Belgium) on 16/06/1856<•>.
We found no further information about that child, but as
their next child, born two years later in the U.S. will
carry the same name, we can assume that he died very soon,
just before their departure or even while they were
traveling to the States.
Between 1856 and
1858, Josephine and Nicholas left their village
in Belgium and emigrated to
the United States, as many Belgians and Luxemburgers did at
that time. Many
of them settled in small
towns around Dubuque, Iowa. This is on the eastern side of
the state and at the
time was on the edge of Midwest settlements. As west of there opened up from the native
American Indians, they
moved further west.
At their arrival in the
States, their name lost the final "e", and became DELPERDANG.
Nicholas and his wife first settled in St.
Donatus (Eastern Iowa) where their first child was born.
Then
they moved
to Plymouth County by rail,
after stopping in
Springbrook and LeMars.
As far as we know, they had six children :
 |
Nicolas Jr., born
on November 17th 1858 at Sint Donatus.
|
 |
Antony, born on
March 4th 1860 at
Springbrook
|
 |
Margareth (Maggie),
born on November 5th 1862 at Springbrook
|
 |
Catherine, born in
July (?) 1863 at Bellwin
|
 |
Mary, born on
September 12th 1865 |
 |
Elisabeth (Lizzie)

About
1870, Nicholas and his wife finally arrived in
Remsen (Plymouth county), in the
Northwestern part of the state IOWA.Their first home was built with sod and located seven miles
northwest of
Remsen,
between Remsen and Alton. Soon after,
in November 1872, his wife
Josephine died in Jackson Co.
On the
1880 U.S. Federal Census
, Nicholas, aged 51, is shown living in Remsen (Plymouth County), as a
farmer and widower. Four older children are living with
him
<•>.
Nicholas died in Remsen on Friday
23rd February 1923, at the age of 83, and was buried in the
Alton Cemetery <•>. A newspaper article reported about his death
as follows :

The six children of
Nicholas DELPERDANG and Josephine STEMPERT got married
and had many children :
 |
Nicolas Jr.
(1858-1938) married Anna KASS in Nov. 1882 (Alton - IOWA)
<•>. They
gave birth to 7 children<•>. Two girls, the oldest and the
youngest, died as infants. His son Pete died in a terrible
farm accident. Nicolas Jr. died in

to see how the LE MARS SENTINEL reported about his death. A
short biography of his son
Alphonse was included in the Remsen St.
Mary's Centennial Book
<•>.

 |
Anton (1860-1947) married
Katharina SUDTELGTE in Jan. 1881 (Festina)
<•>.
A short biography of his
son Vince
<•>
and George
<•>
was included in the Remsen St. Mary's
Centennial Book.
They had seven
children between 1885 and 1905. Katharina died in July
1917
<•>, Anton died in Aug. 1947
<•>. They are both buried in
the Alton Cemetery. The 1910 Federal Census shows that
at that time, his father Nicholas Sr. lived with him
<•>.

 |
Catherine (1863 -
...) married
Peter GAUL in Nov. 1882 (Alton - IOWA)
<•>. They will have 15
children between 1884 and 1905.
|
 |
Mary (1865 - 1953) married Nick
ERNATIN. She died in 1953.
|
 |
Elisabeth (Lizzie)
married Henry GINSBACH in Feb. 1877 (Le Mars - IOWA).
|
Currently many descendants of
Nicholas, and thus of Henri HANSY, are still
living in this area, and a lot of them still carry the name DELPERDANG.
In the cemetery near the
St. Mary's Church in
ALTON (Sioux County, IOWA U.S.A) some
gravestones still remember us the first generations of
descendants of Henri HANSY in the United States.

In Remsen, more than a
century later, the influence of those Luxemburg immigrants
is still visible. The town's motto is : "Little
Luxemburg of Iowa", the architecture of
some houses and dishes and food still remind of the
German-Luxemburg roots of many inhabitants, who every
year in October organize the "Oktoberfest
in Remsen", as
an Annual Celebration of Bavarian Heritage in
northwest Iowa.
